Trash Talk

Here, about to enter my second week of FUNemployment, I'm finally getting around to all those neglected chores on my list. For instance last Wednesday night I stayed in and scraped 50 years of paint drips and grunk off my ancient enamel sink and Caloric mini-stove with a razor blade while watching the best show on television, Tabatha's Salon Takeover.

Even more tedious was my search for the perfect mid-size stainless steel trash can. I'm embarrassed to admit I've lived for two years with one of those small plastic ones that should sit under the sink, but mine's in plain view. Quel cochon! But to quote Cher Horowitz: You see how picky I am about shoes and they only go on my feet. Yet unlike Cher, I am poor. I wanted stainless steel to work with my Ikea shelf brackets and mini fridge but I'm not feeling a brushed finish. I also don't care for oval waste bins; a rectangle would match my sharp-edged cabinet too well. So I Googled, and what I wouldn't give for this shiny circular Danish beauty:

It's a little unsettling when an 8-gallon trash can costs more than the most expensive printer/copier/scanner/fax machine combo I'm considering for my New Business Venture ($469). Plus Vipp, while sleek and sturdy, also sort of looks like a Teletubbie? He's out on price alone.

Next stop was Gracious Home where this Brabantia (that's Belgian for "Danes will gouge you") number caught my eye:

Perfect. Gleaming stainless with no labels or ears or doodads and the pedal mechanism worked like it had hydraulics. But 100 bucks? I could buy three pairs of jeans on sale at Urban Outfitters for that kind of cheddar!

Back down Sixth Avenue to Bed Bath & Beyond. 90% of the selection is by SimpleHuman -- not a bad brand but most of their options are brushed metal. I settled on a polished 30-Liter can so generic they don't even carry it online. Looks like this:

But 20 bucks less at only $29.99! Sure the pedal sticks a little and I might paint the black top red or Klein blue, but it does the job.

Anyone else have neurotic trash can preferences? Do you buy the special bags or just Glad Flexi-strong-whatevers in bulk? I can still see a thin strip of white bag around the lid of mine and it's making me the teensiest bit mental ...

  1. just bought a simple human and i kind of love it....it has an inner can that you wrap your liner around and it tucks into a little hole that grabs the back and keeps it tight, like the thingys on the top of a swiffer, so no visible trash bag for me. plus it has a sexy slow close....

  2. I wanted one that has the two compartments to sort my recyling, but the only stainless I could find was $169 at Bed Bath & Beyond. I am not at a point in my life were I can make that level of commitment to a trash can. The Container Store has something similar for around $40, but its black and uses two bags instead of the buckets. I will be scouring HomeGoods in hopes that the trash can fairy leaves me something not too dented.

  3. Nicholas -You're such a terrifically witty writer! What are trash cans so incredibly expensive?! Good for you for finding such a great can! I've got a tiny plastic Ikea number that came with my apartment. Luckily, it's hidden under my sink.

  4. Sounds like I have the older (no surprise) version of Courtney's - no "holder" thingy, but I can manage to hide the bag. Seeing the bag would be the kind of thing that I would talk to Mr. Blandings about for days and he would arrive home with the Brabantia just to make it stop.

In that pad, no one is going to be looking at your trash can.

  5. Since you asked, here goes my trash bins, kitchen one is Brabanita,
and I am loving the flex bag which stays in place. I do my best to recycle, so there are bins in my garage for paper and plastic.
We have a "disposal" for food scraps - in the Spring, Summer they are added to an outdoor compost.
Now be a dear and take out the trash!

  6. I feel so much less alone in this big bad world now that I know I am not alone in being upset by that slim line of plastic bag showing along the top of my trash can. Thankyou.

  7. But Cher wasn't talking about trash cans.

  8. I have yet to find a trash can which pleases me.
I seem to be holding out until a gorgeous trash can is invented with three separate bins for recycling. Hmmm, may be waiting a while on that....
As far as trash bags go, mine HAVE to have draw strings.

  9. I'm with Courtney-- love the kind with the inner liner with the little claws at the back that hold the excess bag so your can doesn't have muffin top!

  10. Two thoughts:
    1. I have the Simple Human trash can that has the black plastic liner and use glad's normal bag. Put your bag into the liner so it fits nicely with the excess going through that hole in the back. USe three small binder clips to secure the bag. You'll never see the plastic now.

Additionally, I don't use the force flex because it will stretch instead of come out when pulling.

  11. I loved my "bullet" can for years, but several years ago needed a slimmer trash can and went with the superhuman butterfly model with the foot pedal. It's great for dealing with chicken bones and stuff. Much more sanitary. You have to buy the bags that go with your can or you'll have nightmares for the rest of your life.

  12. Trash bag muffin top, priceless! I just checked: no Swiffer-holder thingee my inner can. But I'm trying to finish using all my Tall Kitchen Bags so maybe the drawstring variety will help.

ScottyF: If this solo decorating gig doesn't pan out, I'm going into the trash business.

Mrs. B: Naturally I considered painting my can Chinese red to match the walls (and shelves, and ceillings ...)!

Anon: I'm even pickier when it comes to what Cher was talking about!!

  13. I, like, totally paused when I read this. Ehh...I could do Clueless all comment long, but non!

Why ARE cool trash cans so expensive? Sheesh. Mine are pretty much hidden, but here's a hefty tip from me to you. Go McDonald's on it and keep a replacement bag or two folded at the very bottom on the can; then, when you go to remove the full bag, you'll have another one handy.

  14. I've got a simple human-its my third..the first one had to be passed down to a friend as the pedal somehow stopped working and the second was white and went with the white kitchen i once i had. i've also got a extra mini one for cans and other items to be recycled. so there's a momma can and a baby can.

trash bags...i got for target tall kitchen bags. works just fine. don't waste your money on anything else.

    great post. made me smile.

  15. Simple Human is worth every cent. I bought 4 bad half-way decent looking trash cans before I finally gave in. The hidden bag makes me very happy.

  16. Stainless steel trashcans are majorly cool. I have a plastic one and I feel like I'm missing out by not having a stainless steel one.

I agree, for the most part, but don’t you feel as if the issue is more complex than that?
